About AAL

Astronomy in Lawrence - Amateur and Professional

Astronomy is often classified as the oldest science. Its accessibility to anyone with the ability to look up at the night sky at a dark site has long made it a popular source of amazement for both amateurs and professionals alike. At KU, astronomy has been a key element of scientific research for over 135 years, with the arrival of the first professional quality telescope on campus, an Alvan Clark 6-inch refractor, in 1885. On the amateur side, the Astronomy Associates of Lawrence has been in operation for 50 years, starting from the early 70s. We hope you spend time looking over the website and exploring your interests in Astronomy and the AAL.
